So much Wick news! We just posted about the John Wick anime feature coming out of Lionsgate, but that’s far from the only announcement the studio made about the franchise at CinemaCon today.
Perhaps the biggest news is that the much-rumored John Wick 5 is officially happening—with Keanu Reeves reprising his titular character, something that may surprise those who watched John Wick: Chapter 4, as Wick appears to [REDACTED] at the end (though it should be noted that we never see [REDACTED]).
“Keanu, Chad, Basil, and Erica would not return unless they had something truly phenomenal and fresh to say with these characters and this world,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson said (via Variety) about the leaders of the Wick franchise, which includes Reeves, writer-director Chad Stahelski, and Thunder Road producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee.
Iwanyk and Lee added, “It’s so important to get this story right and give John’s story the proper next step. It’s exciting to take the first step on that road.”
The person responsible for getting the story right are Mattson Tomlin, who is writing The Batman: Part II and who also wrote the comic BRZRKR with Reeves.
But wait, there’s more. We also got confirmation that Donnie Yen will be directing his feature spinoff, Caine, something the actor and director hinted at in an interview earlier this year. During the panel, Stahelski called the feature a “modern day kung-fu classic that explores the John Wick world.”
These projects join the previously announced series in the works titled John Wick: Under the High Table, and we’ll also see the Wick spinoff Ballerina, which comes out in theaters on June 6, 2025.
It seems like there’s a Wick for everyone! I’m not complaining.
